ixetic at the IAA 2009

Better steering, braking, gear shifting, and considerably reduced CO2 emissions

Bad Homburg, 19 August 2009.

ixetic GmbH (Bad Homburg) presents high-tech products with especially low energy consumption at the IAA International Motor Show in Frankfurt am Main. The automotive supplier’s latest vacuum and hydraulic solutions will contribute significantly to the lowering of CO2 emissions. The reduction of carbon dioxide emissions from all new vehicles will be the core theme at the IAA 2009. In December 2008 the European Union drew up a timetable for the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions: By 2015, EU states are to gradually reduce the average CO2 emissions of new vehicles to 120 grammes per kilometre. In order to reach this target, car manufacturers will have to reduce vehicle fuel consumption considerably. “Apart from efficient engines, vehicle fuel consumption optimization calls for particularly economical auxiliaries”, says Georg Wolf, Management Board Chairman of ixetic GmbH. “We offer a whole range of ready-for-production pumps for gear supply, braking force generation and steering support that significantly reduce overall consumption and consequently the amount of CO2 emitted.”

Groundbreaking fuel economizer

Take ixetic’s consumption-optimized EV² steering pump. “Its special technical feature is that it precisely matches pump capacity to need using a proportional valve in the steering system”, explains Dr. Reinhard Plietsch, Development Manager at ixetic. “This leads to lower circulating pressures, which in turn reduces fuel consumption.” In the tests carried out, (NEFZ) the pump saved 0.2 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres. This corresponds to a reduction in CO2 emissions of almost five grammes per kilometre! Full braking power, half the energy requirement  ixetic is also focusing on energy efficiency when it comes to mechanical vacuum pumps. These pumps generate the negative pressure required for brake pressure boosting in both diesel and petrol engines that the intake system – unlike in the past – can no longer provide. The extremely low power consumption of the ixetic vacuum pump is especially impressive. “Compared to our established competitors, we have succeeded in reducing the entire speed range by approximately 50%”, explains Development Manager Dr. Plietsch.

Shift gear and save

ixetic offers highly efficient gear pumps for supplying oil to the gears. Ixetic’s latest double-stroke vane-type vacuum pump, for example, is characterised by very good volumetric effectiveness at low speeds. Another fuel-saving feature is demand-dependent control, based on switchable displacements. This saves around 0.1 litre of fuel per 100 km compared to the other well-known pumps on the market. “The reduction in CO2 emissions of approximately 2.5g per kilometre is double that achieved by competing products”, says Dr. Plietsch.

The technology of the future today: the electrification of pumps

Hybrid vehicles and vehicles fitted with start-stop automatic transmission use a new generation of pumps: electrically-driven vacuum and gear pumps. They require – regardless of the combustion engine – an independent electric drive. At the IAA ixetic will exhibit products that are now ready to go into production. These will be introduced onto the market in 2011. “Our electrified vacuum pumps save around 1.7 g of CO2 per kilometre compared to conventional vacuum pumps”, says Dr. Reinhard Plietsch. In contrast to conventional pumps that continuously generate power via the combustion engine, the electrically-driven pumps only generate power according to need and thereby avoid energy-consuming idle running.

Optimized solution for hybrid vehicles
Another economical energy user is the electrically driven gear pump that supplies lubricating and cooling oil to the gears when the combustion engine is switched off. “Whether for automatic transmission, dual clutch transmission or continuously variable transmission, the pump supplies the amount of oil that corresponds with the desired rotation speed”, explains Dr. Plietsch. “This applies in all electrically-driven driving situations or – in the case of an existing mechanically driven oil pump – to meet demand peaks in a combustion engine driving cycle.” Ixeti’s new gear pump generation reduces consumption by 1.9 percent, while CO2 emissions are reduced by 3.7 g/km.

ixetic + DSI = Success in India

Automotive supplier ixetic has successfully concluded supply agreements for vacuum pumps with two major car manufacturers in India. “This success is clear confirmation of our strategy of having our own employees active in the Indian market”, says Georg Wolf, Management Board Chairman of ixetic. The company has been active in India since 2007, and in future will also manufacture its products there.

“By founding a joint venture, we can quickly meet the requirements of Indian car manufacturers for locally-produced vacuum pumps”, explains Georg Wolf. When choosing a suitable local partner, quality aspects in manufacturing were decisive. “Devilog Systems India, a family-run company, ideally fulfils our requirements in this respect.”

Technical knowledge meets regional expertise

The new joint company, “ixetic DSI Auto Products Private Limited”, will start production in September of this year. As part of the joint venture, modern, efficient vacuum pumps will be manufactured in Bangalore for use in the braking systems of all diesel and modern petrol vehicles. “We bring energy-efficient development and the production procedure into the partnership”, says Georg Wolf. “DSI complements our knowledge perfectly with its local supplier spectrum, existing production facilities and well-trained staff.”

Market share gains expected

Ixetic’s partner DSI was founded in 1985 and last year achieved a turnover of 3.5 million euros. The company employs a total of 150 employees in the southern Indian city of Bangalore. Its production range encompasses diesel filters and multiple-vane vacuum pumps, some of which are manufactured under licence for renowned brands. ixetic, the market leader in vacuum pumps, expects its market share in India to increase significantly in the wake of its activities in the country. Its current market share is 30 percent.

Quality award from Toyota
ixetic receives supplier award

Automotive supplier ixetic has been awarded Toyota’s “Supplier Award for Achievement in Quality 2008”. The award is given in recognition of the hydraulic- and vacuum pump specialist’s consistently high product quality. This is the latest of several prizes to be awarded to ixetic by Toyota over the past few years.

“We are particularly proud of this award, as it is not for nothing that Toyota is considered a quality leader in the automotive industry”, says Georg Wolf, Management Board Chairman of ixetic GmbH. “By awarding us the Supplier Award, Toyota is commending in particular the commitment of our employees at our Hückeswagen plant. At the same time, the prize will act as an incentive to our entire workforce to continue supplying top-quality products and services.”

Product quality through production quality

The prize was accepted by Manfred Würz, ixetic’s Director of Sales, at the annual meeting of Toyota’s European suppliers. “The quality requirements for safety-related precision parts intended to function for the entire lifetime of a car are naturally especially high”, explains Manfred Würz. “Our quality management system systematically prevents possible errors from emerging in the production process in the first place.” Quality management is also aided by ixetic’s deployment of a continuous process optimization system, based on KAIZEN principles.

A reliable supplier for the past seven years

ixetic has been supplying vacuum pumps to the world's largest car manufacturer since 2002. Its pumps are currently used in a number of engine versions for the Toyota Avensis, where they reliably provide the braking system with the required negative pressure.

ixetic: a multiple award-winner

The Toyota Motors Group hands out supplier awards in three different categories at the end of each financial year (March 31). ixetic has been among the suppliers publicly praised by the company three times already. Last year, it was awarded a “Certificate of Recognition” for its cost-reduction strategy. In 2002 and 2004 the company was awarded similar certificates for exemplary project management.

ixetic is getting involved in South America

ixetic is further expanding its international activities. The company, which is already working the USA, Japan and Bulgaria markets, is now planning to capture the South American market for commercial vehicles. ixetic will be participating in this year's AUTOMEC trade fair for automotive parts suppliers in Sao Paulo for the first time, together with a partner. The trade fair will be held from April 14 to 18.

Power-steering pumps for commercial vehicles

ixetic is planning to become involved in the South American market with power steering pumps for heavy and medium-duty commercial vehicles. The German manufacturer is relying on the company DHB Componentes Automotivos as its partner. The company, founded in 1967, is the largest manufacturer of power-steering systems in Latin America and supplies customers in more than 20 different countries. Around 1,000 people are employed at the company headquarters in Porto Alegre in Southern Brazil. "ixetic and DHB complement each other outstandingly", says Kajetan Gressler, spokesman of ixetic. "We have the right product and our partner has direct access to commercial vehicle customers."

ixetic products well known in Brazil

ixetic products are well known in Brazil. ixetic emerged from the INA Schaeffler Group in 2006 under the company name LUK and has been successfully marketing vacuum and hydraulic pumps in South America for some years now through the former parent company Schaeffler do Brazil.Up to now the focus has not been on the power steering pump business for commercial vehicles. For this reason, ixetic is now starting its own activities.

On 17 April 2008, automotive supplier ixetic was handed an award by Toyota Motor Europe at the annual suppliers’ meeting in Brussels: with its “Certificate of Recognition”, the car manufacturer is acknowledging the German pump specialist's performance in achieving common cost-cutting goals.

“This positive feedback is the reward for the hard work and know-how of our entire team,” says Georg Wolf, managing director of ixetic GmbH. “It also underlines the great esteem in which Toyota holds us, also evident in the number of repeat orders awarded to us in the past.” ixetic has been delivering vacuum pumps, required for braking force, to Toyota for six years. The pumps are installed at the company’s Hückeswagen (Bergisches Land) site.

Powerful cost brake – now standard at ixetic
The Certificate of Recognition was awarded to ixetic for its exemplary fulfilment of the cost objectives laid down by the Toyota purchasing department for the 2007 business year, which ended on 31 March 2008. “I am particularly pleased that Toyota praises the precise cost management of the production department in Hückeswagen”, says Georg Wolf. “This shows that we in Germany not only have our costs under control, but also that we are a reliable partner to large car manufacturers who set ambitious cost optimization targets.”

A hat trick for ixetic
This Certificate of Recognition for the 2007 business year is the third such award for ixetic: In 2002 and 2004 Toyota awarded its Certificate of Recognition to it for good project management.

Toyota Motor Europe handed out a total of 27 “cost” category awards at this year’s “Annual Supplier Meeting”, held at the company’s headquarters in Brussels.
